Brief Presentation Summary

Marijuana is currently the mostly commonly used illicit substance by youth in the state of Maine and the primary substance youth are seeking substance use treatment to address. According to the Maine Integrated Youth Health Survey, most Maine youth do NOT view regular marijuana use as harmful. Our state has been implementing a medical marijuana program for the past several years and passed an adult use/commercial market marijuana law in 2016. Currently adult use, home cultivation and gifting are allowed under Maine law. Rules that will govern the commercial market have yet to be written and approved. With greater normalization of marijuana use as well as more access and availability expected, increased use and related consequences are expected as well. It's important for healthcare and school professionals to have a clear picture of public health and safety considerations related to new marijuana trends and legislation.

Learning Objectives

  • Participants will be able to recognize new marijuana products (edibles, extracts, wax) and related public health and safety considerations
  • Participants will learn about trends and the public health and safety landscape in states implementing medical and adult use/commercial market marijuana laws
