Position Description

General Summary:

Camp Uncommon is seeking a Camp Nurse to help oversee all aspects of the Camp Uncommon Health Center. Reporting to the Head Nurse and the Director of Camp Uncommon, and working closely with Health Center Staff, contracted nurse practitioners and camp doctors, and Camp Uncommon Senior Staff, the Camp Nurse is responsible for ensuring the health, wellness and safety of Camp Uncommon campers and staff members. We pay a competitive salary and offer many other enticing benefits, such as free room, board, and laundry services. Please do not worry about the need to have your Maine credentials; as long as you have a certification in any state, you are eligible to begin work at Camp Uncommon. We will then pay for your Maine certification as soon as you begin at camp. Dates are Monday, June 25th through Friday, July 20th.

Camp Uncommon takes place at Colby College in beautiful Waterville, Maine. Colby’s amazing facility offers campers the opportunity to experience a traditional summer camp program on a college campus full of natural beauty. The campus offers indoor and outdoor athletic facilities, a swimming pool, hiking trails, dance studios, theaters, science labs, art studios, a music room, and first-class dormitories.

Camp Uncommon serves 250 middle school students from each of its 6 cities: Boston, Camden, Newark, New York City, Rochester, and Troy. At Camp Uncommon, we:

  • increase students’ social, emotional, and non-cognitive skills (e.g., self-confidence, responsibility, independence, and curiosity), which are essential to college and life success;
  • provide an opportunity for Uncommon middle school campers to explore, learn, and have fun in a safe, tight-knit community;
  • provide a tremendous summer job opportunity/experience for our alumni students and rising 12th graders; and
  • create an additional pipeline for strong, diverse teacher candidates for our schools by providing exposure to Uncommon for counselors new to our organization.

Camp Uncommon runs for 2 weeks and offers the following program for students:

  • Athletics : soccer, flag football, basketball, tennis baseball, kickball;
  • Swimming : swim instruction and general swim;
  • Adventure : discovery/nature and overnight camping;
  • Inter-Arts : arts & crafts, music theatre performance, dance, music;
  • STEM : robotics and coding; and
  • Intensives : improvisation, photography, chess, spoken word, taekwondo, hiking, wacky sports, basketball.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Camp nurses are responsible for the health, wellness, safety, and care of all members of the Camp Uncommon community as well as related administrative duties.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Administer camper prescription medications as directed;
  • Dispense over-the-counter medications as appropriate;
  • Assess campers and staff who are ill or injured and determine if further medical attention is needed;
  • Assist in stabilizing campers and staff requiring transportation to medical facilities;
  • Contact parents of ill or injured campers and staff (if appropriate) and update them as necessary;
  • Documentation of all injuries and care rendered. This involves documentation of all over-the-counter medicines, first aid treatment, and communication with parents, doctors/nurse practitioners or any other off-camp facilities;
  • Maintain inventory of supplies
  • Keep Health Center clean and organized
  • Working directly with the head nurse, nurse practitioner, and and medical director

Qualifications :

  • A minimum of 1 year of nursing in a professional setting
  • All necessary credentials and certifications
  • Experience working with elementary and middle school students (grades 4-9) is preferred but not required
  • Experience working in a summer camp setting
  • Very strong organizational skills
  • A tremendous work ethic
  • An obsessive attention to detail and follow-through
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial, performance-oriented environment
  • Ability to communicate with families
  • A personality and character that exudes flexibility, trustworthiness, creativity, energy, inspiration and positivity
