Recess and Physical Education Cold Weather Decisions:
An Investigation of the In-Practice Development and Implementation of Recess and PE Weather Policies in Maine Elementary Schools

  • Date: Thursday, February 8, 2018
  • Place: United Technical Center, 200 Hogan Road, Bangor
  • Time: 6:00pm - 8:00pm

Speaker: Lauren Jacobs is a lecturer in Kinesiology, Physical Education and Athletic Training at the University of Maine. Before joining the faculty, Lauren was a Pre-K - 8 Physical Education teacher and educational director for a statewide non-profit focused on increasing engagement in outdoor sports. Lauren is a Registered Maine Guide, yoga instructor, and a big fan of being active outside, especially in cross-country skiing and running.

She will be presenting on her Master's thesis research that looked into physical education and recess weather policies in Maine elementary schools. A key finding of her research was that the perceived safety of air temperature was only one small component taken into account when making decisions about whether students may or may not go outside. Additionally, Lauren found that relatively small changes to policies may result in considerably more outside time for students. Lauren will discuss the motivation behind her research, what she found from surveying and interviewing elementary school principals around the state, and what school communities may want to consider when creating or reviewing weather policies. There will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions. Feel free to bring copies of your own school weather policies to add to the discussion.

Feel free to contact Cece Costello or Barbara Carter if you have any questions.
